The Aquaculture Business Development Program today put a smile on the faces of pupils at Ragen AIC Primary and Junior Secondary School in Nyakach Central Ward as they had a special lunch comprising fish, vegetables and Ugali.
The initiative of constructing fishponds and cone gardens in school yards is gradually changing the narrative of school feeding program into a protein rich diet.
The school this morning harvested 549 table size tilapia fish that was used for the lunch program.
The Headteacher Ragen AIC Primary and Junior Secondary School, Mr. Samuel Onyuka Nyaori thanked ABDP for choosing Ragen school for the project.
He said both the pupils and the teachers owned the project from its initiation to harvesting time. They both put a concerted effort in feeding the fingerlings to maturity.
The project he said acted as a learning resource to the community and neighbouring schools who sought advice on constructing ponds in their schools.
Besides partnering with ABDP, the school has also collaborated with Aquaban limited who have constructed a pond to raise fingerlings out of which Mr. Nyaori is optimistic in getting fingerlings for sustainable production.
The school also received cone gardens that has since inspired the pupils to introduce more kitchen gardens that supplement their feeding program.
On her part, the Chair person of the School board , Madam Lilian Achieng Juma, the project has made the student active in that they have acquired skills on how to keep and feed fish to maturity stage.
