The County Assembly of Kisumu has passed two key bills expected to improve service delivery in the Department of Agriculture, Irrigation, Livestock, and Fisheries.
The Kisumu County Agricultural Facilities Financing (FIF) Bill 2023 and The Kisumu County Agricultural Sector Coordinating Bill 2023 sailed through the house early this week with MCA describing them as a shot in the arm for the County’s growth.
The two bills now await His Excellency the Governor’s ascent to become Acts of the County Government.
Reacting to the passage of the Two Bills, the County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture, Irrigation, Livestock and Fisheries, Mr. Kenneth Onyango thanked the Assembly members for supporting his Department.
“The FIF bill will allow our agricultural facilities like Maseno Agricultural Training Center (ATC), Mamboleo slaughterhouse, Kenya Dairy Development Center (KDDC) in Chemelil, and Agricultural Mechanization services, among others, to have a revolving fund that can defray day-to-day operational costs, making our services more efficient,” said Mr Onyango.
On the other hand, the Kisumu County Agriculture Sector coordinating bill is supposed to coordinate the activities of the County Agricultural operations as well as the activities of Non-State Actors in the sector.
Meanwhile, Mr Onyango and his colleague CECMs Elijah Obwori (Kisii) and Dr George Mukok (Busia) have signed an Agreement for Collaborative Research on the management of Coffee Berry Borer (CBB) disease Parasitoids between CABI and the three County Governments at a Workshop held in Muhoroni on 8th March 2024.
This Agreement is meant to improve the quality of Coffee grown in Western Kenya.
CABI is an international, intergovernmental, not-for-profit organization that improves people’s lives worldwide by providing information and applying scientific expertise to solve problems in agriculture and the environment.
