By Lorraine Anyango The Department of Information and Public Communication DIPC, Kisumu County Government, has embarked on a commendable initiative to equip public servants with knowledge and etiquette for effective interaction with persons with disabilities (PWDs).
This initiative involves the development of a disability awareness and etiquette booklet, targeting all public servants within the county. The project is being spearheaded by DIPC in collaboration with Mirale Welfare Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO).
A recent inception meeting, led by DIPC Chief Officer, Mr. John Oywa, brought together relevant stakeholders to brainstorm the components to be included in the booklet. Ms. Carolyn Agwanda, the Governor’s Advisor on Disability Matters, was also present to provide technical expertise and ensure the booklet comprehensively covers the various aspects of disability.
The significance of this booklet lies in its potential to bridge the gap in communication and understanding between public servants and PWDs. By equipping government officials with the necessary etiquette for interacting with people with different disabilities, the booklet aims to achieve a more inclusive and accessible service delivery system within Kisumu County.
Once completed, the booklet will serve as a valuable resource for public servants, guiding them on appropriate communication strategies and etiquette when interacting with individuals with visual, hearing, physical, or intellectual impairments. This, in turn, will foster a more dignified and respectful environment for PWDs seeking government services.
This move is a commitment to disability inclusion, a positive step towards achieving a more equitable and just society for all residents.
