The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Ltd (KETRACO) paid a courtesy call to Kisumu Deputy Governor Dr Mathew Owili, during an inspection tour of the company’s projects in the County.

Led by Mr. Phillip Mongony one of the Board of Directors, the team updated the County officials on the current projects being implemented in ensuring the county becomes energy sufficient by the year 2020.

Projects inspected include the transmission line from the Olkaria geothermal plant to Lesos terminating at the Kibos substation. The multibillion project is expected to transmit 400 kilovolt amps (KVA) of power from the Olkaria plant to the National Grid. This will be scaled down to 220KVA in Kibos substation and an additional 132KVA discharged to Mamboleo substation.

The developments will  transform the county into a ring network serving Kisumu, countries Rwanda, Burundi and Ethiopia with a combined 500KVA of power at its disposal.

According to Dr Owili, persistent power outages have impacted negatively on business productivity in the county.

The 220KVA power capacity substation will make Kibos the largest substation in the county. This will provide enough energy for growing industries across the region.

“With  special economic zones coming up, the county is partnering with the vison 2030 wagon. This will skyrocket electricity demand in the region and a well thought plan has to be tabled on how to ramp up production to meet the demand gap”, said the Deputy Governor.

On cutting down the high cost of energy t Dr Owili proposed that the KPLC infrastructure returns should be structured in a way that it protects consumers from incurring heavy electricity bills regardless of the production costs.

Mr. Mongony was accompanied by Dir. Arch. Kariuki Mwangi, Lesos Kisumu Project engineer, Eng. Samson Akuto among other representatives.

The deputy governor was flanked by the CEC member for Business, Trade and Energy Alice Moraa, County Secretary Dr Olango Onudi as they held constructive talks with KETRACO.
