The Ministry of Industrialization, Trade and Cooperatives in partnership with International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA) organized a biotech Bt Cotton sensitization workshop focused on the revival of cotton industries in the leading counties including, Kisumu, Makueni, Busia Kakamega, Bungoma, Machakos, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet and Kilifi. While giving his opening remarks, the CEC Member for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Hon. Gilchrist Okuom lauded the host for introducing the Bt cotton, a breed that is resilient and of low maintenance cost. He also urged the participants to have positive deliberations that will motivate farmers to develop renewed interest and enthusiasm as they mobilize them to embrace again the crop to enhance their economic growth. The workshop resolved to a joint commitment to revive cotton farming and ginneries in the selected counties for the pilot project. The Bt cotton exhibits genetic resistance which is a permanent type of resistance and not affected by environmental factors. Thus, protects crop from bollworms.
