At least 30,516 needy students in Kisumu County have received school fees worth Sh102 million in form of bursaries and scholarships.
Deputy Governor Dr. Mathew Owili, presided over the disbursement on behalf of Governor Anyang Nyong’o earlier today.
The programme aims to increase retention and completion rates at the secondary level and stem the worrying trend of secondary school drop-outs.
According to the Deputy Governor, the selection of the beneficiaries was done fairly by the County and Ward Education Bursary and Scholarship Committees enabling children from poor families to acquire education.
The education fund was gazetted in 2017, when Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o took over office.
Joining the ocassion were Education CEC John Awiti, County Assembly Education Committee Chair Seth Okumu, Majority Whip Seth Kanga his counterparts Ben Adega, James Were and representatives from the Education sector.
