The 96th Kisumu Music ,Art and Cultural Festival

By Sandra Atieno

The vibrant city of Kisumu, recently hosted a sensational celebration of art, culture, and music. This event, the 96th edition of the Kisumu Music, Art, and Culture Festivals, was a testament to the city’s rich tapestry of traditions, talent, and diversity.

Taking center stage at the Mama Grace Onyango social hall, this two-day extravaganza drew participants and spectators alike from various walks of life. It was a spectacle of creativity, bringing together artists, cultural enthusiasts, students, and community members to revel in the beauty of artistry and heritage.

The festival graced by the CEC Member for Sports and culture Hon. Beatrice Odongo, served as a dynamic platform for performers from diverse backgrounds to showcase their talents. From the resonating beats of traditional drums to the graceful movements of dancers adorned in vibrant attire, every act illuminated the stage with the essence of Kisumu’s cultural essence.

One of the festival’s highlights was the performance by Kadibor epicenter. Their enactment of folklore and traditional stories painted vivid pictures of the region’s history and heritage. The audience was transported through time as they listened to captivating tales passed down through generations, connecting them to their roots.

Maseno University, a renowned institution in the region, also left an indelible mark on the festival. Their traditional dance performance was a mesmerizing display of rhythm, synchronized movements, and the deep-rooted traditions embedded in the local culture. The audience couldn’t help but be swept away by the infectious energy and grace of the dancers.

CSC (County Sports Council) presented visually captivating acts that transcended language barriers, communicating narratives through the universal language of art. Through their artistic expressions, they stirred emotions and sparked contemplation, leaving an imprint on the hearts and minds of the spectators.

Notably, the festival wasn’t just about professional artists and institutions. It was a celebration of budding talent as well. Under-18 students showcased their skills, proving that age is no barrier to artistic expression. Their performances were a testament to the nurturing environment provided by their schools and the dedication they put into mastering their crafts.

Bible schools, often seen as bastions of spiritual guidance, surprised the audience with their engaging performances. They utilized drama and theatrical elements to convey meaningful messages, blending artistic expression with moral lessons and storytelling.

The Swift dancers, with their dynamic and high-energy routines, electrified the atmosphere. Their performances were a fusion of modern and traditional dance elements, symbolizing the evolution of culture while preserving its essence.

Maseno University took the stage once again, this time interpreting narratives that resonated deeply with the audience. Their portrayal of stories and themes relevant to the local community showcased the power of storytelling as a means of cultural preservation and reflection.

As the festivities drew to a close, the audience was treated to a thought-provoking screening of ‘Daughters of the Lake.’ This poignant film shed light on the struggles and sacrifices women often endure in their pursuit of success. It highlighted the complexities of life choices, offering a glimpse into the challenges faced by women and the paths that may diverge from societal expectations.

This film served as a poignant reminder of the societal issues affecting women, prompting discussions and reflections among the attendees. It was a testament to the festival’s commitment not only to celebrate culture and art but also to address relevant social themes and inspire dialogue.

The Kisumu Music, Art, and Culture Festivals were more than just a series of performances; they were a celebration of identity, a tribute to heritage, and a call for societal introspection. The event transcended mere entertainment, serving as a beacon of cultural exchange and understanding among diverse communities.

Through the medium of music, art, and culture, the festival encapsulated the essence of Kisumu’s spirit—resilient, vibrant, and rich in tradition. It served as a reminder of the importance of preserving cultural heritage while embracing the evolving landscape of artistic expression.

As attendees left the Mama Grace Onyango social hall, they carried with them not just memories of captivating performances but a deeper appreciation for the beauty of diversity, the power of storytelling, and the resilience of the human spirit—a true testament to the success and impact of the 96th Kisumu Music, Art, and Culture Festivals. The qualified teams shall proceed to perform at Machakos.
