By Sherine Atieno In a proactive move towards promoting mental well-being, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) has launched a comprehensive initiative to coincide with World Mental Health Day on October 10, 2024.
To ensure early detection of mental health issues among its staff and the wider community, JOOTRH will administer a user-friendly digital screening tool. This tool, designed by the hospital’s ICT department, prioritizes privacy while facilitating efficient assessment.
Dr. Richard Lesiyampe, the CEO of JOOTRH, emphasized the importance of addressing mental health as a continuous priority, not just a one-time event. He stressed the need for comprehensive sensitization and support for all staff members.
The sensitization campaign will kick off on October 3, beginning with the hospital’s management team. The goal is to foster a supportive workplace environment where individuals feel comfortable seeking help when needed. Dr. Lesiyampe encouraged everyone to break the stigma surrounding mental health and consult with a psychiatrist if necessary.
To amplify the message, JOOTRH’s communication team has created eye-catching posters and banners, while partners have provided event-themed t-shirts. Additionally, the hospital has initiated continuous medical education (CME) programs to educate staff about the significance of mental health in the workplace.
As part of the World Mental Health Day activities, JOOTRH will host a symbolic march on October 10. Over 200 staff members will walk from Kombewa market to the iconic Kit Mikayi, demonstrating their commitment to mental health advocacy.
In collaboration with Kisumu County, JOOTRH will also conduct screenings and sensitization programs in schools, universities, and hospitals on October 7 and 9. Healthcare workers at JOOTRH will be a particular focus during these outreach efforts.
By prioritizing mental health and providing accessible resources, JOOTRH aims to create a more supportive and compassionate environment for its staff and the community it serves.
