Governor Anyang Nyong’o has today hosted a delegation from UN-Habitat led by Ms Beryl Khanyile, Head of Kenya Country Programme, for a meeting focused on housing, urban development in Kisumu county.
At the heart of the conversation was the Partnership for the Implementation of the New Urban Agenda (PINUA 1). A project that seeks to drive inclusive, green, and resilient urbanization.
The PINUA 1 project is set to focus on several crucial aspects, which include Co-production of green incremental housing, Participatory slum upgrading, Cooperative social rental housing and other supportive work for affordable housing, urban planning, housing policy review, and lakefront development initiatives.

Through this, Kisumu actively seeks to strengthen their Affordable Housing programme by tackling the financing gap in social housing.
In Kisumu, the focus is also on supporting sustainable growth across municipalities, starting with practical interventions in areas where communities already live and build.
The meeting comes ahead of a scheduled public participation forum in Muhoroni Sub-county, on Wednesday 25th of June, where UN-Habitat and the County Government plans to engage residents on the proposed upgrading and development of Shauri Moyo and Shauri Yako estates

Governor Nyong’o said “I’m particularly pleased to announce that this project will be implemented in the Shauri Moyo and Shauri Yako estates in Muhoroni Municipality”
The governor also emphasized the County’s commitment to shaping “the new Kisumu”, a people-centered model metropolis turned toward the lake.

“We also had fruitful discussions on the economic revitalization of Kisumu through the ambitious lakefront development, truly making Kisumu “face the lake, “he added.
These initiatives also aim to help bridge the gap in social housing, working with the local communities, co-operatives, and the private sector.
Also in attendance were CECM Lands and Physical Planning, Dr Charles Konyango, Salmon Orimba ( Public Service), and officials from both the county and UN- Habitat.
