Governor Anyang Nyong’o has committed to promoting arts and culture in Kisumu, following a meeting with the board of management of Mama Grace Onyango Cultural Centre.
The board led by Chairperson Prof. Humphrey Obara paid the governor a courtesy call to discuss key issues around the governance, autonomy, and future resourcing of the cultural centre.
The talks come at a time when the county is looking to strengthen its support for the creative economy and provide more structured opportunities for young artists across Kisumu.
Governor Nyong’o noted that the centre plays a critical role in nurturing local talent, especially among the youth.

He revealed plans to establish an ultra-modern theatre in Kisumu, a space that will give local creatives room to perform, tell their stories, and earn an income from their work.
“My vision for Kisumu County includes an ultra-modern theatre that will provide a dedicated space for our talented local artists to perform their skits and showcase their incredible work,” he said.
He added “This initiative is a direct reflection of my manifesto, which recognizes art as a vital avenue for employment and youth engagement.”
The governor believes that investing in creative infrastructure like the theatre will help reduce idleness among the youth and build safer, more engaged communities.
The governor emphasised that Kisumu must continue to position culture and creativity as part of its growth agenda, giving artists the recognition, tools, and space they deserve.
Kisumu county is expected to work closely with the board and other stakeholders to guide the next phase of development for the cultural centre.
Also present at the meeting were Mama Kisumu Dorothy Nyong’o, CECM for Culture Beatrice Odongo, and Deputy City Manager Charles Omollo.
