Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o today welcomed Mr. Edward Omol of Kenya Shipyards Limited (KSL) to his City Hall office today for a pivotal briefing on the county’s progress in maritime infrastructure.
The meeting also featured Kenneth Onyango. CECM Agriculture, Fisheries, Livestock Development and Irrigation, Paul Njenga, CEO of Lakefront Development Corporation, who, together with Mr. Omol shared details on the successful delivery of five artisanal fishing boats and a patrol vessel, all manufactured and supplied by KSL.
The new fleet commissioned by Kisumu County marks a significant milestone in efforts to safeguard fisherfolk across five local beaches in the county.
The initiative was spurred by growing concerns over annual fatalities linked to unsafe softwood vessels.
“Far too many lives are lost annually due to the use of unsafe softwood boats,” the governor stressed.
By introducing sturdy and professionally crafted boats, the county aims to reinforce safety, elevate operational efficiency, and restore dignity to the local fishing industry.
The patrol boat is set to play a critical role in enforcing safety regulations and protecting Lake Victoria’s rich resources; bolstering the county’s push toward a thriving blue economy.
Governor Nyong’o extended heartfelt thanks to KSL for their timely delivery and commendable craftsmanship, celebrating the move as a bold step toward safer waters and stronger communities in Kisumu

With this strategic partnership, Kisumu is sailing steadily toward a brighter future built on innovation, sustainability, and maritime resilience.
Also present were Chief of Staff Aloice Ager and Dr Ali Matano, the blue economy advisor to Governor Nyong’o.
