In a powerful address during the Kisumu County Court Users Committee (CUC) meeting held at Acacia, Kisumu, Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to justice, equity and community resilience.

He said this while addressing an audience of judicial officers, court users and county officials led by CECM of Sports, Culture, Gender and Youth Affairs Ms Beatrice Odongo, at Acacia Hotel, during the Kisumu Court Users Committee, Justice Sector, and County Government Roundtable focused on enhancing access to justice and services for survivors of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGB

Governor Nyong’o highlighted the urgent need to address rising cases of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) across the county and expressed deep concern over the surge in GBV incidents, particularly in the informal settlements of Nyalenda and Manyatta.

He emphasized that the issue is not confined to urban centers, noting similar challenges in rural regions such as Nyakach and Muhoroni.

“These occurrences are reflective not just of a societal issue, but are often linked to the challenging economic conditions that our communities face,” he stated.

In a landmark initiative, the County Government of Kisumu, in partnership with ActionAid Kenya, is set to launch a Community-Based Gender Protection Center in Nyakach.

The center will provide critical support and protection for GBV survivors, marking a significant step in the county’s efforts to create safer environments for vulnerable populations

Governor Nyong’o also outlined ongoing programs aimed at empowering youth and women to combat drug and alcohol abuse issues he described as deeply intertwined with GBV.

These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to foster resilience and safety within Kisumu’s communities.

The governor lauded the judiciary for its continued collaboration and progress in expanding judicial infrastructure. He announced the upcoming opening of a new court in Nyakach sub-county, which will enhance access to legal services for residents in the region.

“This is a vital step toward justice accessibility,” he noted, expressing gratitude for the judiciary’s dedication.

Concluding his speech, Governor Nyong’o called for sustained partnership between the county government and the judiciary.

“Together, we can forge a path toward a more equitable and just society,” he affirmed.

The Kisumu CUC meeting served as a testament to the county’s proactive stance on justice reform and social protection, setting a hopeful tone for future collaboration and community empowerment.

Also present at the event were, Jared Okelo, MP Nyando Constituency, Beatrice Odongo, CECM of Sports and Gender, Alloys Ager, Chief of Staff and other representatives from Judiciary, Equality Now and KMET.
