Kisumu County Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o has convened an inter-agency security meeting to address rising insecurity within the county.
The meeting, which included the National County Security team, Sub-County Administrators, and the City of Kisumu officials, aimed to find solutions to a range of issues, including the increased sale of illicit brews, inadequate street lighting, the rise of vigilante groups, and sexual violence.
“We resolved to strengthen a multi-sectoral approach to security and revise our security enhancement efforts to deter insecurity in our county,” Governor Nyong’o stated during the meeting.
The Governor announced that all streetlights in Kisumu are set to be revamped and solarized. In partnership with Kenya Power, they will be fitted with CCTV cameras for maintenance and efficiency within sixty days.
“We will also be looking into setting up a modern command center at the Kisumu Fire Station in collaboration with our county security team, which will help in coordinating real-time monitoring and response to insecurity,” he added.
Governor Nyong’o also declared that all current boda boda operators will be registered afresh according to their bases of operation. They will be required to limit their pillion passengers and observe set hours of operation.
The meeting further resolved to revive traffic marshals in the City, who will be assisted by county police officers.
“There is a need to engage political leaders and stakeholders in solving the issue of vigilante groups,” the Governor said, highlighting a collaborative approach to the problem.
