Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to nurturing young talent and promoting intellectual sports, such as chess.

Speaking at the official opening of the 2025 Victoria East Africa Under 21 Chess Tournament in Kisumu, Nyong’o expressed pride in supporting such events. He promised to ensure the tournament’s annual hosting and committed to providing the necessary facilities and partnerships to celebrate the passion and excellence of the young champions.

The Governor, noted that the current tournament was “truly inspiring,” having brought together some of the “sharpest young chess players from across the region and beyond” to test their skills and celebrate the spirit of competition.
He further emphasized the core value of the game, stating that chess is about more than just winning; it’s about “engaging with others, learning, and growing through challenge and discipline.”
Concluding his remarks, the Governor extended a warm welcome to all the talented players, wishing that “the sharpest minds prevail” and that the “spirit of competition continue to grow and inspire.”
