On Thursday, Governor Anyang Nyong’o officially commissioned the enhanced Akado Centre for Vocational; Expertise in Automotive Engineering. Positioning it alongside Rotary Vocational Training Centre as the central hub for county fleet repairs and hands on youth training
The commissioning of the state of art workshop marks a strategic shift in the County’s approach to vehicle maintenance and vocational training.

County government vehicle repairs will now be conducted in house at Akado VTC and Rotary VTC, moving away from reliance on private garages.
The commissioning happened when Governor Nyong’o visited the Akado VTC for the Kisumu Conference Centres of Vocational Expertise in Action.
The governor said “I had the opportunity to tour the newly enhanced Motor Vehicle Mechanics Department at Akado and I’m thoroughly impressed. I thought wonders were going at Rotary VTC in the city, but what I’ve seen here today is just as remarkable. Akado feels like a campus.”

He added “As county government, we will do our best to support and improve the great work happening here without promising anything concrete”
While addressing the conference regarding Akado, the Governor said plans for further support would be guided by internal consultation and formal proposals.
“This is a matter we shall take up in the Cabinet, guided by a proposal from our able Minister for Education, Mr. John Awiti.” Governor Nyong’o said.

“I’m confident he will present a cabinet memo on Akado Vocational Training Centre, and once that discussion takes place, we will communicate the County Government’s position and way forward,” he added.
The Governor emphasized that the investment in vocational training is aligned with Kisumu county’s long term development agenda, which includes youth empowerment. Industrial growth and self-reliance.

“What I witnessed wasn’t merely an investment in bricks and mortar, but a bold step forward. A symbol of our collective commitment to empowering the youth of Kisumu County with market-ready skills.” The governor said.
The enhanced Automotive Engineering workshop at Akado VTC is now fully equipped to handle full mechanical servicing and diagnostics, creating a direct pathway for trainees to gain critical industry experience.
With Akado and Rotary VTCs now central to the county’s new maintenance framework, Kisumu is laying the groundwork for more innovative, cost effective and youth centred public service model.
