The County Directorate of Climate Change in partnership with Transparency International together with other partners have organised a two day stakeholder workshop in a bid to harmonize the roles of various partners for a better and coordinated climate change actions in Kisumu County.
This comes after the county launched the County Climate Change Policy and the County Climate Change Act, 2020 in December last year paving way for the implementation of the Climate Change Action Plan.
The Chief Officer Climate Change and Natural Resources, Maryline Yanzar Agwa while presiding over the official opening the workshop , noted the programs being undertaken by the key actors on the ground, hence the forum is key in sharing experiences from the county public participation which informs the budgeting processes.
She also acknowledged the support from the partners towards attaining the policy and the Act which contributed immensely towards Kisumu being earmarked to benefit from Ksh 400 million towards Financing Locally Led Climate Change Actions ( FLOCCA) at the ward level.
The policy will inform the climate change budget allocation where 2% of the budget will go into climate change mitigation and adaptation programs.
The county is currently forming a council and planning committee that will involve CSOs representative in order to facilitate partnership and resource sharing to avoid duplication of activities.
The forum further seeks to improve on monitoring and evaluation on climate change actions for accurate data and effective communication to the people in the community.
The climate change directorate is working towards putting in place the climate change council and ward climate change planning committee in order to have a community owned structures.
Day one had presentations on building institutional framework for climate change Governance, role of CSOs in mainstreaming climate change into community activities, roadmap to developing climate change actions through NCCAP framework, understanding climate change indicators tool for M & E reporting and verification and introduction to sustainable energy and climate action plan.
