
The event is celebrated annually on the 21st November, with the National event held in Luanda K’otieno beach in Siaya County.
Kisumu County joined the rest of the world in marking World Fisheries Day 2024.
This year’s theme is Collaborative Governance for Blue Transformation and Sustainable Investments in Fisheries
The significance is to highlight the importance of sustainable fisheries, the protection of aquatic ecosystems and livelihoods of fishing communities.
Kisumu County in partnership with Healthy Food Africa project, this time celebrated by donating 100 portable non carcinogenic food racks to trading groups namely: Tetemesha, Kaka saa dhi, Chiew chon ber, Kodima Kanyaya, Oneno group, Kondele twins, Kondele fresh fish, Obunga pap mbuta and Strong abilities group.

Speaking while presiding over the distribution of the portable non carcinogenic food racks at the ABDP regional office, the County Director Fisheries and Blue Economy, Madam Susan Claire Adhiambo emphasized on the fish quality assurance aspects.
She cautioned the traders against improper food handling that does not resonate with food safety measures.
She added that as traders, they are key stakeholders in the fish value chain node , therefore they must observe fish quality and fish handling after being capacity built by the Healthy Food Africa.
The groups expressed their gratitude and excitement as their group leaders thanked the County Government for their support.
They said interference emanating from cats, dogs, goats and dust will be a thing of the past.
The food racks are portable, easy to clean and are raised 2 meters off the ground hence maintaining the food quality and improving their sales.
The group leaders requested the County Government to provide them with umbrellas and solar lamps to help them sell even when it drizzles or when dark.
Also gracing the occasion were County officers from the Fisheries unit including Mr. Kennedy Owiti, Dancan Ochieng among others.
