The national government is set to revamp the fisheries infrastructure within the lake region counties at a total cost of ksh 1.45 bilion.

Speaking in Kisumu, CS Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs , Hon. Salim Mvurya unveiled the development projects alongside Kisumu Deputy Governor Dr.Mathew Owili , IFAD Country Director Mariatu Kamara and Siaya Governor H.E James Orengo.

Ksh400 million, he said has been set aside for fish cages, with an additional Ksh 50 million budgeted for modern boats and additional security along the fishing lines.
“In Kisumu we have earmarked Ogal and Asat beaches as priority areas for value addition and aggregation to strengthen fishing activities within the area”, added the CS.

According to the Deputy Governor, continued cooperation between IFAD , the national government and devolved units have laid progressive frameworks that have catalyzed the development of regulatory policies that protect the lake’s resources.
The consultative forum on blue economy brought onboard MP’s ; Rosa Buyu, Millie Odhiambo, Tom Ndege, Raphael Wanjala and Dr. Ojiambo Oundo.
