Day two of the PrAEctiCe partnership meeting in Kisumu was purely a facility visit to Vicinaqua project situated next to Nyalenda lagoons.
The Vicinaqua project is one of the designated labs (lab one) in East Africa that will facilitate the PrAEctiCe project’s data validation.
Vicinaqua is a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) that uses treated waste water from the lagoons then recycled to produce tilapia variety.
Currently, 17 farmer groups in Kisumu have been attached to this system for learning purposes and they have implemented the system in their homes.
The officers at Vicinaqua project also offer extension services to the farmer groups whom they say are doing well in their projects.
So far they have cascaded the systems that are up and running to four farmers from four counties: Kisumu, Siaya, Kakamega and Nakuru
The project solely depends on online marketing to sell their fish and fingerlings. They also do aggregation by linking clients to other hatcheries in order to help them sell their produce.
