The County Government of Kisumu has appealed to all Sugar Millers within the region to obey the directive by the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA), which they issued suspending the milling for three months.
The County’s CECM for Agriculture,Irrigation ,Livestock and Fisheries Kenneth Onyango said that the decision by the authority cited a bitting Sugar cane shortage as the reason for their action.
AFA acting Director Jude Chesire had said that cane Shortage had led to massive cane poaching and harvesting of immature crops and only the Southern part of Nyanza had been spared.
“We are saying this because continued milling will result to cane poaching and harvesting of immature cane as the factory strives to meet its milling capacity” he said.
He added that by selling immature cane ,the farmers are likely to incur losses because their crops will not attract tye expected weight.
He however lamented that one privately owned Sugar factory has Continued to mill and is harvesting Sugar across the sugar belt.
