Kisumu City recently hosted the 4th African Sub-Sovereign Network (AfSNET) conference, where both President William Ruto and Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o emphasized their administrations’ shared commitment to fostering intra-African trade and regional integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

During the opening ceremony, President Ruto lauded Kisumu’s strategic role as an emerging investment hub, unveiling transformative development initiatives to bolster the county’s economy. Key projects include: Advancing the Special Economic Zone in Miwani, completing the Kisumu International Conference Centre at the Mamboleo ASK Grounds, finalising the Kabonyo Kanyagwal Fisheries and Aquaculture Training Centre of Excellence, realizing the Lakefront Development Project, establishing a Maritime Surveillance Centre at a cost of KSh 3.5 billion, we are committed to partnerships and collaboration to foster a united and prosperous Kenya,” President Ruto remarked.
Governor Nyong’o, addressing the delegates, highlighted Kisumu’s growing stature as a hub for global trade and investment forums. “This event reaffirms Kisumu’s position as a leading destination for international collaboration,” he stated.

The Governor stressed the importance of strengthening local governments and investing in infrastructure—such as roads, rail, and energy—to unlock economic potential. He also underscored the need to support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), vital for integrating local businesses into Africa’s trade value chain.
A standout moment of the conference was the screening of a documentary showcasing Kisumu’s investment opportunities. Among the featured projects were: upgrading Moi Stadium to a FIFA-standard complex, completing the Kisumu International Convention Centre,developing the Kisumu Promenade, designed to enhance public access to Lake Victoria while integrating hospitality, commercial, marine, and recreational facilities.




Another major milestone was the signing of an agreement between the Kisumu County Government, Great Lakes University, Afreximbank, and Med Aditus Pharmaceutical for a KSh 1.6 billion pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in Kisumu.
President Ruto’s strong endorsement of Kisumu as a development hub, coupled with the county’s ambitious plans, signals a transformative future for the region. With national and local leadership aligned, Kisumu is poised to become a cornerstone of Africa’s economic empowerment.
