River Auji, which until in the recent past was covered with lush vegetation, charming scenery and clear waters; perfect for leisure walks and sightseeing, today, is affected by pollution due to domestic waste disposal along the banks, which not only threaten the health of the residents, but also affects the quality of water
Coupled with increasing population pressure, the catchment area has been destroyed, degrading its vital ecosystems into polluted stream of waste.
Faced with the threats of pollution, displacement, and biodiversity loss, a pilot project dubbed UNEP’s Generation Restoration cities aims to restore two biodiversity hot spots along the river. By joining, UNEP’s Generation Restoration cities, Kisumu County aims not only to restore nature but also to improve livelihoods and safeguard the well-being of its people.
It is in the light of this that a multi stakeholder meeting that brought on board community members, CBOs, RUAS, among other leaders was held in Nyalenda to have the views of the community incorporated in the report and the action plan towards the restoration of Auji/ Wigwa river.
The participation by the community members in giving their in put towards the development of an action plan creates space for community involvement in the initiative, promotes inclusivity and a sense of belonging resulting into impact on individuals which are pre- requisites for successful projects.
Also attending the meeting were the area Chief Madam Lena Jobita, representatives from Nyalenda A and B village Administration: Mr. Kenneth Mando and Mr. Steven Okoto among others leaders.
