Riding on the slogan “Easy path makes equal path” that resonated through the event, various stakeholders gathered at Kolunga Primary School grounds in Nyando Sub-county to mark the International Day for Persons with Disabilities emphasize the importance of inclusivity and equal opportunities for all.
Focusing on the accessibility needs of persons with disabilities (PWDs), the event, led by Miral Welfare Foundation, featured the organization’s Kenya Country Director, Ms Bae Eunsun, who underscored the collective responsibility of citizens to uphold the rights of PWDs and ensure their active participation in society.

“Accessibility for persons with disabilities is not merely about changing physical environments. It is a crucial foundation for creating inclusive and sustainable societies,” Ms Bae stated.

She further noted that when accessibility is assured, PWDs can freely engage in education, employment, and cultural activities, enriching the diversity and dynamism of communities.
The National Council for Persons With Disabilities (NCPWD), Nyanza Regional Director, Mr. George Odhiambo, the event’s chief guest, reflected on the period before the enactment of the Disability Act in 2003, describing the challenges PWDs faced due to widespread discrimination.
Mr. Odhiambo lauded the progress made since then, urging attendees to celebrate milestones achieved while recognizing ongoing challenges in the inclusion journey.

Ms. Caroline Agwanda, Advisor to the Governor on Disability Matters, highlighted Kisumu County Government’s efforts to improve accessibility for PWDs.
She pointed to initiatives such as providing assistive devices and financial support, emphasizing that these measures not only enhance the quality of life for PWDs but also benefit the broader community by promoting equality.
Ms. Agwanda also commended Miral Welfare Foundation for their exceptional dedication to addressing the needs and welfare of children with disabilities.
Adding to the discussions, Miral Foundation’s Child Sponsorship Program Manager, Jay Park, elaborated on the organization’s holistic approach to community development. Through programs spanning education, health, and socioeconomic empowerment, Mr. Park highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts in driving meaningful change.
Miral Foundation received widespread praise for its commitment to safeguarding the rights of children with disabilities and fostering social inclusion for vulnerable groups.
Shajanand Limited Holdings, represented by its Owne, Mr. Ravji Chhabhadia, demonstrated its commitment to environmental sustainability by donating trees for planting during the celebration. To date, the organization has contributed over 40,000 tree seedlings to reforestation efforts.

The event also featured exhibitions from various organizations, offering attendees opportunities to learn about different disabilities and their associated services. A tree-planting activity capped off the day’s celebrations, symbolizing growth and unity.
This year’s theme, “ Inclusive Community and Accessibility Rights of Persons with Disabilities ,” called on organizations to sustain efforts in raising awareness and delivering disability services.
Representatives from organizations such as Tinada, Lisa Hospitals, Kenya Red Cross Society, the Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya (APDK), Cheshire Disability, Hope for Women with Disability, and the Ministries of Education and Health were in attendance.
