A significant step toward building a new, modern sports facility in Kisumu was taken today as a joint team from the Ministry of Defence (MoD), Sports Kenya and the County Government inspected Moi Stadium. The assessment marks the start of a major project aimed at transforming the facility into a state-of-the-art sporting hub.

The delegation was hosted by the County Secretary, CPA/CS Hesbon Hongo, and the CECM for Sports, Culture, Gender and Youth Affairs, Hon. Beatrice Odongo.
Speaking on behalf of Kisumu Governor, the County Secretary welcomed the visiting teams and extended gratitude to H.E. President William Ruto for what he termed “the best gift” to Kisumu County. “This is a dream come true,” Hongo stated, emphasizing the project’s potential to nurture sports talent in the region.


CECM Hon. Beatrice Odongo highlighted the importance of the new facility for local athletes. “After completion, it will be a milestone for the department,” she said. “The facility will significantly help our sportsmen and women in their game preparation, providing a proper venue for training and competition.”
The team from the Ministry of Defence confirmed their commitment to delivering a stadium with a seating capacity of 10,000 to 15,000 within the existing 3.77-hectare area.

In a move aimed at boosting the local economy, the Sports Kenya Eng. John Ruga announced that the majority of the manpower required for the construction will be sourced from Kisumu, ensuring job creation for local citizens. The commencement of the project is expected to usher in a new era for sports in Kisumu, providing world-class infrastructure to develop talent and host major competitions.
The assessment visit involved several key County Departments to ensure seamless planning and execution. Representatives from the departments of Lands, Physical Planning, Housing & Urban Development, and Infrastructure, Energy & Public Works were all in attendance. Also present were the Chief Officer for Sports, Culture, Gender & Youth Affairs Ms. Magdalin Wasama, the Director of Sports Mr. Brian Muga, and other departmental officers.
