A major County face-lift has been commissioned to revamp the Jomo Kenyatta highway and Ang’awa avenue under the ongoing non-motorized transport project in Kisumu city.
The project which is under Kenya Urban Support Program (KUSP) is among other two projects which include the construction of modern fire stations and reconstruction of rotary youth centers.
The department of Lands, Housing, Physical planning and Urban Development revealed that the project is aimed at redesigning roads within the city which would take in pedestrians, motorists and cyclists, expansion of drainage systems, putting up of street lights, planting of flowers and green vegetation in the city roundabouts and also the creation of service ducts beneath the roads.
Speaking during an interview with the County directorate of Communications, the chief officer Mr. Steve Gome stated that 240M has been allocated for the project out of the 770M given by the world bank for the financial year 2018/2019.
He also mentioned the relocation of street vendors along the major roads under reconstruction as one of the major challenges they are facing in this transition period.

Kisumu County is currently working on a partnership with the Planning department of Maseno University to plan on the recently gazetted towns. This is in line with the Urban Areas and Cities Act that will see the four satellite urban centers i.e. Kombewa, Maseno, Katito and Sondu converted into towns.
This collaboration will be cost effective to the County since it’s a government to government arrangement. The planning exercise is important for purposes of service delivery in those areas such as water, sanitation, infrastructure planning and access to the Kenya Urban Support Program funds.
It’s in the light of this that Kisumu Governor, Professor Anyang’ Nyong’o and the Vice Chancellor of Maseno University, Professor Julius Nyabundi signed an M.O.U to fast track the process.
The planning of the border towns will put to rest the perpetual political upheavals in those areas focus being put on service delivery.
The Vice Chancellor, was accompanied by the University DVC’s; Prof. Catherine Muhoma and Professor Chacha alongside Dr. Kola the department’s Dean.
The initiative was introduced by the County department of Lands under the leadership of CEC, Dickson Obungu and the Ag.Chief Officer, Arch. Steve Gome
