The County Department of Infrastructure, Public Works and Energy led by the CEC Hon. Salmon Orimba has today officially launched the 2022-2023 Machine Based Road Maintenance Programme for Muhoroni Sub County in Chemelil Tamu Ward and Muhoroni – Koru Ward.
Accompanied by other County officials, teachers and students of Achego Girls Secondary School, the Minister kicked off the programme by commissioning improvement works on the 6Km Chemelil Academy – Achego Access Road that is set to improve mobility in the area.
The project which will be fully implemented by the County under the countywide programne will involve excavation works, storm water drain works, grading and part gravelling with a bid to improve accessibility.
The students and the teachers could not hide their joy as their long, bumpy and dusty rides will now be a thing of the past. Late last year, the Principal of Achego Girls Madam Millicent Odhiambo sent out a special request to the County Government through the Deputy Governor Dr. Ochieng Owili during his tour of the region to consider rehabilitation works on the section, a request that has now come to fruition with the commencement of this improvement works.
The Programme is part of the Government’s plan to ensure effective, reliable and accessible infrastructure through provision and maintenance of roads, bridges among other infrastructure within the County at a reduced cost. In this Financial Year, the County targets to gravell at least 40km of roads through the machine based program and construct/ maintain 82km of roads through contract framework.
It should be remembered that during the last great flooding that occurred in Kisumu, the county lost 99 roads worth about 400 million shillings.
While addressing the students and residents, Hon. Orimba expressed the County Government’s commitment to improve accessibility in every section of the County upto the village unit. He assured them that the administration is focussed on delivering on the promises made by the Governor during his re-election bid.
“We will open up roads to ensure accessibility to our facilities and will deliver on the promises made to you by our Governor as set out in his Manifesto”. Orimba said adding that they will hold an engagement forum with area Members of County Assembly to allow them share the list of priority areas.
The team also commissioned improvement works on the 4.5Km Lake Basin – Dispensary – Opondo Dola Access Road that serves a myriad of facilities existing within Muhoroni – Koru Ward.
With Muhoroni having been conferred with the status of a town, it is now crucial to take it to the next level by improving its key infrastructure such as roads which are important development avenues for any developing economy.
From Muhoroni, the team moves to Nyando Sub County.
Hon. Orimba was accompanied by his Chief Officer Eng. Brian Ondiek, Sub County Roads Engineer Eng. Laban Hongo, Achego Girls Deputy Principal Kennedy Onyango, Area Ward Administrator Ken Ochieng, MCA representatives among other County Officials.
